Digital Library of the Caribbean

February, 2008

dLOC Project Partner the Universidad de Oriente in Cumana, Venezuela, under the direction of Dr. Abul Bashirullah, Professor and Director of Libraries, hosted a three day Digitization Course where more than 30 participants from four universities learned about digitization and how to become part of the Digital Library of the Caribbean. The dLOC co-Director Gayle Williams, Project Coordinator Brooke Wooldridge and dLOC Programmers/Trainers Mark Sullivan and Lourdes Santamaría all traveled to Cumana to facilitate this training and meet with other potential dLOC partners who were invited to the training.

During this event, the dLOC trainers presented an overview of digital library software, digitization standards including recommended equipment and software, scanning recommendations and image editing tools, copyright protections and metadata creation. In addition, dLOC launched a newly updated Toolkit which streamlines the process for partners and members to provide content to dLOC.

The Universidad de Oriente is one of the original five founding partners of dLOC, and we are very excited to begin incorporating their submissions into the digital library. The University was created in 1958 and now has a network of five campuses throughout eastern Venezuela. The University's Digital Library already provides a wealth of regional historical information and University publications including two academic journals and a growing number of student theses and dissertations.

dLOC is accepting applications for four new dLOC Advisory Board members.  During the past two years, the Advisory Board provided feedback and support for the project and the collection of resources has grown to over 2,500 titles (www.dloc.com). This new 2008-2009 Advisory Board will play a vital role in the continued success and sustainability of dLOC.  The Board will provide guidance to the dLOC Executive Committee and the co-Directors by reviewing proposals for collections, by nominating collections for inclusion, and by reviewing standards developed by the sub-committees.

If interested in becoming a member of the dLOC Advisory Board, please send a statement of interest and qualifications to project coordinator Brooke Wooldridge at (dloc@fiu.edu) before March 1, 2008.

Updates on dLOC project progress and reminders on upcoming events will be posted to this site regularly.
